Pearls and Curls

Theresa

I’m 20 and I live in the centre of Birmingham, where I am currently undertaking my nursing degree for which I am a course rep. I help with bringing all members of our course together, both students and staff to develop ideas in which to improve the course itself and improve student satisfaction. This role has very much improved both my communication and leadership skills. I am a very passionate and motivated person, especially when it comes to my education and career. I aspire to join the Royal Air Force as a nurse when I complete my training, which gives me the opportunity to travel the world whist improving the lives of those who serve our country. Those that know me well would describe me as a confident, independent and driven young woman. I openly embrace all of life’s challenges because I believe they should be taken as an opportunity to develop and grow as an individual. I am honoured to be taking part in Miss Universe GB 2014 and I will use my motivation and dedication to challenge myself into being the best role model for young women and ambassador for my country.

My name is Charlotte and I am a second year law student at Sheffield Hallam University. In the future, I would love to work in an international law firm and have always wanted to since the first time I saw ‘Legally Blonde.’ I study French alongside my degree with the aim to achieve fluency in the next few years. I have always wanted to obtain a career within law as I would like to help others and make some difference however small by taking part in pro bono and further charity work in the future and proving that women are powerful. Throughout the past I have organised various charity events such as hotel events, karaokes, discos, social nights out and so much more raising just under £2,000 in the past couple of years for a variety of charities which are all close to my heart. My main passion is Latin and ballroom dance, which I thoroughly adore; I compete in competitions with my dance partner throughout England which is great fun. I also help teach children Latin, ballroom and freestyle dance at my local dance school which is extremely rewarding to see each dancers improve.

I have always focused on my studies, achieving the results I dreamed of. With hard work and determination, I became an A-grade student which has given me the opportunity to study law at the University of Nottingham. While trying to survive this demanding course I worked part time, which helped me develop myself as a person – gaining confidence, learning key skills and interacting with such a variety of people. The latter, is what I enjoy the most. Every one of us has an abundance of kindness, knowledge and talent to share with the world and being able to help others recognise this is what I strive for. Every one of us has a story to tell. I have always aspired to learn about other cultures, and I began to do this by travelling after graduation, exploring unknown countries to me. I believe that travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer and I aim to see more of the world. I aspire to find true happiness and make those around me happy. I aspire to celebrate life and not overlook life’s small joys while searching for the big ones. I aspire to live life to the full!

I grew up in the city of Worcester, the home of Worcestershire sauce! I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a 2:1 in Business Management. I have also worked hard to create a career in modelling which alongside pageantry is a passion of mine! My dream is to one day run my own business. This inspiration came from wanting to follow in my father's footsteps. My favourite quote is by Albert Einstein, "Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value". I would like to use my entrepreneurial skills in a socially responsible way to raise awareness and funds for charity. This led me to set up a local community project at University through SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) teaching Cub Scouts' and Girl Guides' entrepreneurial skills. I raised £2300 for Child Reach International by climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania by setting up various business ventures. I also previously suffered from psoriasis and as a result I am now an ambassador for the British Skin Foundation, a charity close to my heart. I would use the Miss Universe Great Britain title to show other women that they are powerful and can achieve anything.

I am 20 years old and a first year fine art student at Hertfordshire University; I have aspirations to work in the London Gallery sector curating and putting together exhibitions for free lance artists. I have a great love of the arts and my hobbies include drama and singing and I cannot go anywhere without a book with me! I am obsessed with fictional history books and have read over a 100 on different periods in history. One of my aims in life is to visit every state in the USA; I have conquered two states already! Only 48 more to go and luckily I have my whole life ahead of me to achieve it! As a Miss Universe Great Britain contestant I hope to raise awareness for the organizations chosen charity ‘Strongbones’ and fundraise in the run up to the competition. This experience is unique and special and I am extremely excited to be a part of it this year!

My name is Penny and I am from the beautiful garden of England, Kent. Apart from my English heritage, I am also Fijian and long to visit the outstanding country and learn more about the people and their ways of life. This is where I developed my passion for travelling the world to experience all cultures as we are all so unique and diverse. I am inspired by those who make the best of what they have, spreading hope amongst families and communities. Hope is where it starts and I want to influence the type of hope that we can believe, achieve and have faith in who we are and who we have around us, after all the gift of hope is the biggest gift that can ever be given. I have two A levels and I am highly regarded within my professional life. Becoming the winner of Miss Kent has to be the biggest achievement so far that has bought me the most rewarding experience, here is where I discovered that there is an inner beauty about a women who believes in herself and at that point she’s capable of anything she puts her mind to.

I was born in Dunstable, Bedfordshire in 1993, before moving to Cranfield to be with my mother in my early teens. In school I excelled in art, textiles, and travel and tourism studies, all of which interest me greatly. I am fascinated with learning about different cultures and have travelled to many places and have volunteered at a family run salon in Turkey, back in 2012. I am currently a bar and nightclub supervisor at Vogue Style Bar in Bedford where I live. I have enjoyed working in hospitality and retail since I was 18. I also spent some time working at Luton Airport, where I took part in a Princes Trust Get into Airports Programme. The programme and support from my family increased my confidence and inspired me to continue pushing in my career resulting in gaining a supervisory position within just months of getting my current job. In the future, I would like to travel the world, and would love to inspire other young people to push themselves and make the most out of their abilities. I also dream of developing a part-time modelling career as a commercial model and would love to become a television presenter.

I was one of the main faces for Forest Hill Fashion week and havefeatured in prestigious magazines such as; Black Beauty, Complete fashion magazine, Black Hair, Fashion Affair, Ok Nigeria magazine, and was the cover girl of the magazine Fire Up. In 2014 I was asked for the first time to be a guest judge and mentor on the up coming show “beyond the look” where I mentored young girls with similar ambitions. I also hosted the show “New Women” in central London an event designed to motivate and encourage young entrepreneurs.

I am a Biomedical Sciences Bachelor’s degree holder and currently taking up my Masters at Manchester Metropolitan University which will hone me in pursuing a career in Medicine after. I became independent at a very young age and was appointed as a Youth Officer in which I was involved in organising events and took part in charitable missions of raising funds for Cancer Foundation and Alzheimer’s disease. I am a course representative and a Science and Engineering ambassadress which developed my interpersonal skills and trained me to become an analytical and rational decision maker. I was able to experience to own a salon at the age of 18 in which I realized the benefits to society even at a smaller scale. I was given an opportunity to work as a health care assistant and was trained as a Red Cross first aider which made me want to contribute as a medical practitioner in the Royal Army. Being selected as one of the finalist in Miss Universe Great Britain will empower my advocacies to give me a chance to promote and continue working on humanitarian missions.

Growing up my mother always said to me, “you either dream big or don’t dream at all”. I was brought up knowing that ‘if I wanted a car, I would have to dream of an airplane’…only that way I would get a car. In life we must not only try, but we must give our everything, to achieve what we desire. I believe that opportunities come and go and it is our choice weather we grab it or not. I have been blessed to have had some amazing opportunities come my way, I have appeared in three international magazine covers, including ‘Nossa Magazine' (BRAZIL) 'SU Magazine' (FLORIDA) and 'Fashion Affairs Magazine' (NY). I have also modelled for Nova Chiu at London Fashion Week, where I appeared in VOGUE UK. I left school with 10 GCSE’s, and will finish my IT College with three distinctions. Acting has been a massive interest of mine from a young age, therefore I always trained at private theatres, and in September I will start my university course for performing arts (Film, TV and Stage), where I hope to take my career in acting to a whole new level.

I’m off to university in September to pursue a degree ub psychology and criminology. While this is my chosen career path, I am ferociously fascinated with fashion and culture! Being a brand ambassador for the prestigious Hugo Boss, I am hoping that my fascination and extensive knowledge will open doors to various opportunities. I love making men and women feel confident in their clothes and am most satisfied when I am helping others. I never pass up on an opportunity in life and believe even the smallest gestures such as a smile can make a difference. I’m spontaneous and lives for the moment whether its travelling to the other side of world alone on a new adventure or running a marathon with a group of friends for charity. I live by the motto 'whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve' and believe no matter what happens you should remain thankful and humble.

Hey, my name's Claudia Hoyle and I am very honoured to have been selected as a finalist for Miss Universe GB! I currently work with young children but am looking forward to exploring the world next year, working in countries such as America and Africa for 18 months. In the future, I would like to be able to travel to some of the less well developed countries of the world and use my skills as a nursery pratitioner to work with children who are less fortunate. I have family in West Africa in the Cameroons and I hope to spend some time there in the next couple of years helping in schools or an orphange. When I am older I would like to take these experiences and use them to help me develop my own childcare nursery. I recently started getting into pageants and found them really enjoyable. I also discovered they are not only great to build on your confidence and social skills but also a great way of using your title to help others such as charity work.

Originally born in Surrey, but now living in Bristol I am about to graduate this summer from a BA journalism, media and cultural Studies degree. Outside of education, I have worked as a model for a variety of brands and companies which has led to publication in magazines, websites, TV etc. I love travelling to experience new cultures and meet new people, spending time with friends and family and workout. I enjoy an adrenaline rush, completing bungee jumps and more recently a skydive for the Miss Universe GB charity: Strongbones. I have also previously raised money for children's charities through my work with a national radio station I have many ambitions in life; I hope to one day be fluent in Spanish, as it’s such a beautiful and widely spoken language which I have been learning for many years. Additionally, having previously worked in radio and PR, I hope to further my experience in the media industry by building a successful career working in TV. Overall, I hope to enjoy my life with family and friends whilst using my experiences to hopefully make an impact in the lives of those less fortunate. I’ve always been a lover of the arts, with a particular interest in fine art and design. I love visiting art galleries; my two favourites are the Tate Modern and Tate Britain in London. After studying a degree in fashion design at Nottingham Trent University and graduating in 2010, I continued to follow my career aspirations, joining the Sports Direct design team shortly after – a position I still withhold. It’s always been one of my ambitions in life to set up my own business – and that’s something that I accomplished last year selling personalised items on notonthehighstreet.com. Although still an expanding business in its early stages I absolutely love the undetermined path of running my own business. This has not only given me a great sense of personal achievement but has meant I’ve learnt a great deal about finance and profitability … and I’ve met some fantastic people along the way! One of my favourite quotes of all time ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.’ Winston Churchill. A few other facts about me; I live in a pub, I have a Staffordshire bull terrier called Weller, I love weight-lifting and I love my crazy friends and family!

I was born in Cardiff in November 1991. My family originate from Wales, the Caribbean and Pakistan, making me a quarter White, quarter Black and half Asian. I have five younger siblings who I adore, as the eldest I aim to be a good role model for them. I am also blessed with an amazing, strong and beautiful mum who supports me in every way possible; I aspire to be a credit to her in all that I endeavour. I currently study media in Liverpool and will be graduating in July this year. I have lived in various places across England and Wales, as a result I really enjoy exploring new places, finding new opportunities and making new friends. In 2013 I took part in a competition show called Celebrity Super Spa which aired on channel 5. With focus and determination I won 1st place, this was a life changing experience for me because I learnt a lot about myself. My self-confidence improved dramatically and I finally realised that I can achieve anything I put my mind to. This experience led me to apply for Miss Universe GB 2014, I’m now excited for what this experience will bring. Being able to meet other ambitious women, raising money for charities, travelling, spending time with children and being a positive role model… it’s just a phenomenal feeling and I truly hope I continue this journey into Miss Universe 2014 and beyond.

I currently run a promotional modelling agency and I consider myself a budding entrepreneur. I am a huge lover of the outdoors and enjoy keeping active by skiing, hiking, surfing and running. I ran the London marathon last year to help raise money and awareness for the World Wildlife Fund. My main ambition in life is to travel the world and make friends along the journey. My dream is to inspire women to be the best they can be every day. Entering Miss Universe GB and being a finalist has helped my own self belief and confidence to be motivated and excel in everything I do not only on stage, but off stage as well. It has made me push my fitness levels, take up new interests and challenges, I work in the London property market and it has driven me to work harder and take success and opportunities out of everything. Miss Universe GB has empowered my life and if I was lucky enough to win I would love to help other women feel the same empowerment too, as it's a great feeling knowing you are the best version of yourself that you can possibly be.

I was born in Nottingham June 1989. From when I very first started school to when I left school I went through terrible bullying which led me to being hospitalized having a lot of time off school and moving from one school to another. The one thing that I always found as a comfort to me was the ability to be able to sing and write songs which naturally helped me express my feelings and was the one thing that I was in total control of. I love being on stage because when I perform it is like a release of energy which makes me feel good and strong inside and many people have said I’m like a different person on stage. I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome at 17 years old and was told by my mother at 18 years old. When I was little I felt slightly different to everyone else but when I found out and researched it all made sense. Differences in the senses are common with Aspergers Syndrome I am very sensitive to sound, taste and light but I have learned to live with this. Many of us, including me, have been bullied and misunderstood by others and I hope that what I have chosen to do with my life will help other people to understand and also encourage and empower others with Aspergers. Like many people with Aspergers, I sometimes see the world differently, for example, I categorise people as different kinds of animals-this is related to the way to look or their personality, sometimes both.  I am a giraffe! Some people find this odd but other people use categories too-age, gender, race, religion and so on. It’s just a less usual way of seeing people but it is intuitive for me-sometimes people do not understand! I like to call Aspergers Syndrome “Asparagus Syndrome” many of us Aspies have a very good sense of humour! Now I am aware of why I am different I understand why it is sometimes difficult for me to make friends although I do have some close friends. The syndrome makes me creative and has enabled me to create my image which has helped people to appreciate my music. I am proud to be here today, and to have shared some of my story with you-thank you!

You might catch me cat-walking down the vibrant streets of Camden Town - home to legendary music artist - the late Amy Winehouse and British Hip Hop trio, NDubz. I began to gain self-esteem and the confidence to turn my life around after participating in Miss Universe London 2013, and successfully gaining a place in the final. I took a leap of faith and began to work my hardest to excel in an area that was completely new to me. My later success in the pageant began to unfold after winning Miss Universe London Public Vote 2013, which in turn resulted in me winning a place in the Miss Universe Great Britain 2013 final. Some of the words used to describe me by my closest friends and family include; crazy, intelligent, indecisive, beautiful – both inside and out – and determined, which evidently shone through as half way through my business administration apprenticeship, my employers witnessed enough hard work, dedication and drive to offer me a full time position within their company – CEVA Logistics, where I am now a full-time Administration Clerk. I have not always been a Camden girl; I grew up and went to school in Cricklewood. Towards the end of my secondary school years, I never cared much for my education and consequently failed my GCSEs. I then left home at an early age (16), and that alone taught me to be extremely independent. I came to discover that hard work is the only key to success. It was then that I decided that I would not be a product of my old environment or prove right, peoples low expectations of me. I re-sat the exams I was not entirely happy with, and went on to study A-Levels in Applied ICT, Psychology and Sociology. I chose not to attend university as I wanted to gain knowledge in a variety of subjects that were of interest to me: beauty retail, AAT accounting and business admin and by doing so, provided me with the grounding to be able to apply for an Apprenticeship in Business Admin, which put me in the fortunate position that I am in now. Both my good and bad experiences through life have enabled me to realise how important it is to give back; not only do I do my part for charities, in particular Cancer Awareness, Macmillan Cancer and Cancer Research whereby I participate in races and other fundraising events. I am proud to say that I am now also a blood donor and am due to next give blood on June 4th.

My name is Sara, I'm 24 years old and I currently live in Glasgow. I am an outgoing friendly individual who is full of ambition. To date I have achieved many things which I am proud of. I started modelling when I was 17 years old and got my first modelling contract in London after winning Specsavers Spectacle wearer of the year. From this I gained a modelling contract in Glasgow and since have been juggling university, work and modelling. In 2011, I graduated with a 2:1 honours degree in history and politics from Strathclyde University. This is something which I am very proud of as I worked hard to achieve my degree. In 2012 I won the title of Miss Earth Scotland and was lucky enough to travel to Manila, Philippines where I stayed for one month. This was very challenging and a huge reality check, It made we realise how lucky we are to stay in such a wealthy and prosperous country. During this time I grew as an individual and it was an experience I will never forget. To top of this experience I made top 16 out of the 91 countries competing, this making history as the only Scottish contestant ever to archive this and only second from the UK as a whole. The experience has made me want more, and I feel now I would be ready to take on the demanding but fulfilling role that is Miss Universe GB. In my spare time I love to spend time with my family and friends. I have a vast group of friends who I spend time with, mainly socialising, going out, shopping or keeping fit at the gym. I'm a determined individual who has worked hard, and who will continue to do so to achieve my goals. I want to show not only the younger generation of females, but all ages that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I feel I have the experience, determination and commitment to be a good role model and the drive required to represent Great Britain at the international finals of Miss Universe 2014.

Hey, I'm Amanda, I'm running to be our representative for Great Britain because I have aspirations to make life as full and rich an experiences for not only myself but everyone I come in contact with. My philosophy in life is that, 'if you are not making someone else's life better, then what's the point?' There are so many opportunities in this world, and I know that by seizing these, it gives others the ability to believe in the power they have to do whatever they want to do. I, one hundred per cent believe this and having previously been Miss Scotland, competing across the globe, I know how it's possible to affect so many lives positively. I love to do things that scare me, and I like to encourage others to, because limitations and fears only exist in our own minds. I aspire to be purposeful, naturally curious and authentic in all that I do. That includes in my studies and professional life. I studied business & management at university before a masters in marketing, and now I work as a digital marketing manager for the largest bank in Europe, while studying a second honors degree in computing and software development. Aside from academics, sports and the arts are what gets my adrenaline flowing. I run everywhere, and when I can't do that I cycle. I ski, scuba dive, play football, golf, horse ride and love an adventure. I also dabble in acting and singing which is the highlight of any day. I am creatively inspired by out of the box thinking, recently art and photography and enjoy sketching on paper, glass, receipts, handkerchiefs... asically anywhere. If I leave with one thought, it is..... Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think and twice as beautiful as you'd ever imagined.

Leonna

My name is Leonna, I am 25 and from a beautiful city in Scotland called Dundee. Although I was born and bred in Scotland, I am of mixed heritage with my father’s roots being from the stunning island of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. I am very proud to embrace both cultures and feel it has given me some amazing opportunities. In 2011, after completing my BA in Business and Finance, I decided to enter Miss Trinidad and Tobago UK, which I was lucky enough t be crowned queen. This led me on a year of amazing experiences from travelling back to the Caribbean, charity events, media events and more importantly, being a proud ambassador. Throughout my life, I have always been determined and focused to achieve the best I can. I strongly believe anyone can reach the heights they want, if they just put their mind and heart to it. This mindset gave me the confidence to become a successful business owner of a licensed premise b the time I was 21, with prospects going from strength to strength. The next goal I aim to achieve is to open up a restaurant, to build a successful portfolio of businesses. I am very excited to be given this opportunity as a finalist for Miss Universe GB and really look forward to the exciting experiences that await me.
